John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is made in small quantities from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive Cabernet plantings. It has become a definitive Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, made only in years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available using less than one per cent of the top Cabernet grapes.

Coonawarra - which is an Aboriginal word meaning 'honeysuckle' - is an isolated region 450 kilometres away from Melbourne and 380 kilometers from Adelaide.It is renowned for its unique geological and climatic features - ideal for growing vines bearing the highest quality grapes.

Coonawarra's fame comes mostly from a freakish natural phenomenon called the terra rossa. Meaning literally 'red earth', the terra rossa is a low, cigar-shaped ridge of soil some 15 kilometres long and up to 1 kilometre wide.

Terra rossatopsoil is rich and free draining but thin - from just 5 centimetres to 100 centimetres deep. It is one of the best soils for growing vines in Australia; ideal for creating small, well coloured berries that develop in optimal sunlight. The end result is a yield of intensely flavoured grapes that are perfectly suited for making premium wine.

Like all great wine regions of the world, Coonawarra's climate is cool and marginal. It is South Australia's southernmost wine region, positioned just 80 kilometres from the chilly southern ocean and cold Antarctic winds.

The vines are assured a long, cool ripening period that builds up the intensity of flavours slowly in the grape and ensures a balanced acidity. The resulting wines will always be among Australia's finest for their richness, intensity, flavour and longevity.

October and November of 2008 received above average rain that reduced frost pressure. The rest of the growing season from December - March was very dry, with only 25mm in late January to freshen the vines pre-veraison. High temperatures in short bursts in January necessitated careful irrigation to maintain canopy function and vine health, which was excellent in the vineyards through to harvest. Between the short hot spells the temperatures were cool to mild which created excellent flavour development.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Matured for 22 months in new French oak (53%), one year old French oak (40%) and two year old French oak (7%).

The palate shows great depth & width of flavour, with ripe, silky tannins. Classic Cabernet cassis sits along side smoky, spicy oak and more complex notes of violets, tobacco and dark chocolate. This wine is at once concentrated and elegant with fine structure and wonderful length. It seamlessly combines the signature purity of Coonawarra Cabernet fruit with balanced, lingering spice and savoury complexity.
