Who Are West Mount Wine?
We are independent Wine Merchants and wine tasting specialists that have have been operating since 2005. We pride ourselves on our small but carefully chosen range or wines, glassware and accessories and on our quality advice and service.
We are based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and deliver wine throughout the UK. On this web site you will find a wealth of information and knowledge and you can buy all of our wines online. We hope you enjoy our website and look forward to being of service.
West Mount Wine was founded by Paul in 2005 to offer a different way of learning about and buying wine. Extensive lectures on soil types, climate variation and vineyard drainage were not for us. Debating what makes a wine taste great by actually tasting it was for us. So that's what we did.
Our initial objective was to host and run wine tasting and wine education events for small groups, offering basic knowledge on how to choose and enjoy the best wines possible within your chosen budget.
In 2007, we decided to launch a wine merchant to enable our customers to buy a hand chosen selection of wine that we both use in our events and are delighted to promote. You won't often find these wines in the supermarket and we aim to offer them at highly competitive prices to offer you great value, with the bonus of access to our knowledge, great advice and service.
We are a small business and our prices relfect our low overheads. We seek to offer some of the most competitive prices on the majority of our range.
What we do
We want our clients to get excited about the vast variety and quality of wine that's available in the most eclectic market in the world; the UK.
There are three main objectives of this website and West Mount Wine:
- The Wine Shop - here we sell a small selection of hand chosen wines at competitive prices
- Wine Tasting Events - bespoke events for both individuals and corporate clients ranging from 'basic introduction to wine tasting events' to 'prestige tastings'
- Advice and Knowledge - we want all our visitors to learn more about wine, and this section gives advice and guidance on selecting the best wine along with discussions and articles on contemporary issues.
You're probably expecting a photograph of one of the team with their nose stuck in a glass and a biography about how they worked in Bordeaux as a grape picker for the 1990 vintage and became hooked on Chateau Latour (c. £600 per bottle to you) at such an early age.
Well, although we do love Latour 1990, we can't afford it. We do stick our noses in the glass as part of the tasting process (it is important, honest), we don't really want to be photographed doing it!
What we do want is to move away from the cliché of wine being a difficult drink to understand. Wine is a great drink that has endless varieties and combinations. It's a drink that is too often overcomplicated and over analysed. We want to get back to wines that bring pleasure, fun and excitement. We want to share our enthusiasm and passion.
So, no clichéd photograph, no Chateau Latour (yet), but great tasting wines and interesting and relevant events.
Our tasting staff are trained at least to Advanced level by the wine trade education body, the WSET. Most either hold or are engaged in their studies for the WSETs flagship qualification, the Diploma in wines and spirits. You can therefore be assured that our staff have the highest degree of knowledge of the contemporary wine business. And they want to share it with you!
Key Personnel - Paul
West Mount Wine was founded by Paul in 2005 to offer a different way of learning about and buying wine.
His enthusiasm for wine is invariably tamed by his long suffering wife who has more than once compared him to Miles from the film Sideways - but without the beard.
Favourite wine: Paul's love of red Burgundy shows no sign of abating and he has been known to be keen on a drop of anything from the Rhône and Australia. He finally broke through his Italian wine aversion a few years ago, which has now tipped his bank balance over the edge!
Least favourite wine: £10 Champagne
Rants: Paul becomes intolerable when confronted with poor customer service.
Favourite food: Red Mullet and anything that can be described as a dessert
