It hails from the Miapo Valley in Chile and offers spicy black fruit along will well balanced and integrated oak and a long and complex finish. VINEYARD The Viña Chocalán is located in the Maipo Coastal Valley in the Melipilla Region of Chile. The vines for the Reserva Syrah are an average of 9 years old and are grown on 50% chalky, well drained soil and 50% deep, well balanced soil. Limited canopy management is practiced on the vines with no de-leafing, the removal of lateral growth and a green harvest at 80% varaison. The vines yield 6,500 kg/ ha. The grapes were handpicked on the estate between the last week of March and the first week of April, and gently de-stemmed. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Syrah VINIFICATION The must underwent a cold maceration of whole berries for 5 days. The juice was then inoculated with natural yeast and then fermented in stainless steel tanks at 26ºC. Free run juice only was used. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels of 50% French, 40% American and 10% Hungarian oak; 50% new and 50% single use; 100% of the blend was then aged in barrels for 14 months. The wine was fined and filtered before bottling. TASTING NOTE This intense garnet and violet hued wine has a complex and distinctive nose that features creamy notes and spices mixed with plum, strawberry and coffee. The palate is elegant yet bold, full and meaty. Notes of vanilla and chocolate from barrel ageing add further complexity that backs up the potent fruit and leads to a long finish.
