VILLA TONINO SYRAH
'Baglio Curatolo'
2004
Villa Tonino are famous for their Marsala, but this Syrah shows that their winemaking skill is transferable! A deep coloured and fleshy wine with considerable oak, well integrated into the body of the wine.
VINEYARD
The Baglio Curatolo Syrah shows the affinity that Syrah has for Sicily. It has often been said that Syrah is very similar to Nero d'Avola (indeed, the winemaker has planted some Nero d'Avola in a vineyard in Heathcote in Australia on the basis of the Shiraz produced there), and this example illustrates his point. The grapes for this wine came from a single vineyard near Agrigento in south central Sicily.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Syrah
VINIFICATION
The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks and is then aged in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for 12 months. The wine was lightly filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
It is deep coloured, ripe and fleshy. The oak is evident, but will retreat to the background over the next six months or so.
