VIE DI ROMANS FLORS DI UIS 2008
Vie di Romans is based in the heart of Isonzo and this wine is an un-oaked blend of unusual grape varieties. It has a perfumed, waxy style, rich with lime blossom, apricots and sweet spices, which lends itself remarkably well to ageing. The wine possess remarkable finesse and complexity and is generally seen as one of Italy's finest white wines.
VINEYARD
Fruit comes from three vineyards - Boghis, Ciampagne and Vie di Romans in the commune of Mariano del Friuli. The average age of the vines is 15 years, with 3.88 ha in production.
The elevation of the vineyards is between 29-34m.
The vines are trained Single Guyot with a density of 6,000 vines/ha.
Soils range from shallow to medium deep with gravel-pebbly textures. They are mainly sand-silt with ferrous and aluminium oxides and are well drained.
Yields are 7,257 kg/ha and 1.13 kg/vine.
GRAPE VARIETIES
48% Malvasia Istriana, 31% Friulano, 21% Riesling
VINIFICATION
All three varieties were hand-picked in the first two weeks of September.
Grapes were picked, de-stemmed and crushed before pre-fermentation cold maceration at 8ºC for 6 hours.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel at temperatures of 16-19ºC with selected yeasts and lasted 13-22 days.
The wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation and was aged for 7 months in stainless steel tanks on its lees.
Blending of the separate varietals took place just before bottling in mid-May 2009 followed by 11 months in bottle before release.
TASTING NOTE
Light gold with an intensely fragrant nose with perfumes of lime flowers, a touch of honey and citrus which gives way to a surprisingly powerful, full-bodied palate, given a lively freshness by the naturally zesty Riesling and a softer, riper character by the Malvasia. Long and perfumed to the finish.
