VEGA SICILIA UNICO 2000
There's not a lot more that can be said about this wine; the fabled Vega Sicilia Unico. It is a unique wine and one of the greatest Spanish classics. Hailing from Ribera del Duero, this is the reference wine for this Bodega; think of it as a Spanish First Growth. With redioculously low yields and great attention to detail in the vineyard and winery, this is one of the world's great wines.
Also available in-bond.

VINEYARD
The Vega Sicilia wineries are located in Valbuena de Duero, in the province of Valladolid, on an estate made up of a fertile plain that follows the course of the river. The river is the northern boundary of the 1,000 hectares of the property; the southern limit is set by the woods, which stand on the slopes leading to the plain.
The estate has a plantation of 250 hectares of vineyard, which contains 80% Tinto Fino variety or Tempranillo de la Ribera, and the rest is Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec.
The soils are clayey-limestone, with brown-grey streaks and an alluvial area.
Like all great wines, Vega Sicilia begins in the vineyard. The Tempranillo is trained in gobelet fashion, whereas the French varieties are trained in a Guyot system.
In 2000, approximately 40% of the crop was subject to green harvest and the main harvest began on October 14 without problems, with a yield of 20 Hl/Ha.
GRAPE VARIETIES
93% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), 7% Cabernet Sauvignon
VINIFICATION
he alcoholic fermentation usually lasts fifteen days at a maximum temperature of 32 degrees. The optimum ripeness of the selected grapes from the harvest and the alcohol content, which varies between 13% and 14.5%, facilitate the extraction of colour and tannins. Vega Sicilia Único ferments in oak vats
Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak storage containers before resting and settling.
The following January the wine is transferred first to large wooden vats for 15 months, then 23 months in new barrels, 15 months in 1-2 year olds barrels and then a further 24 months in large wooden vats.
The remaining time is spent ageing in botlle before release in 2010.
TASTING NOTE
Deep ruby colour with intense cherry rim. The nose is extensive and powerful showing an unusual fruity and pure Unico due to a powerful vintage. Aromas range from plum to all types of seasoned fruits. The palate is great and opulent with a precise tannic structure. Complex and persistent.
