G. D. VAJRA BAROLO 'BRICCO DELLE VIOLE' 2004
The estate of GD Vajra (named for its current operator Aldo Vajra's grandfather, Giuseppe Domenico), is situated in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. Its vineyards are planted at heights of 350-400 metres, which results in distinctive and aromatic wines. The
'Bricco delle Viole'
from a great vintage demonstrates a what a truly classic Barolo is all about; violets, roses and perfumed fruit backed by robust but balancing tannin. Lovely!
VINEYARD
The
'Bricco delle Viole'
vineyard is located in the commune of Barolo. The average yield is 45hl/ha. One part of the vineyard is planted with vines which are now over fifty years old. The yield of these old vines is less than 30hl/ha.
The name Nebbiolo comes from the Italian
'nebbia'
meaning fog and refers to the weather at the time of harvest. Nebbiolo is always the last grape to be picked in Piemonte and harvest can be as late as the end of October/beginning of November, when the weather starts to get cold and autumnal.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Nebbiolo
VINIFICATION
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures less than 32°C. It lasted for three weeks.
The wine was matured for more than three years in oak. Approximately 5% of the wine was matured in small French oak barrels, the rest matured in 25/30hl Slovenian oak barrels.
TASTING NOTE
Intense garnet colour, with hints of brick red, the 2004 Barolo
Bricco delle Viole
has perfumes of violets, roses and raspberries. On the palate it has the characteristic structure of a top Barolo, with plenty of robust tannins given flesh by the ripe, perfumed fruit.
