TINTO PESQUERA RESERVA 2006
It is wines like this that firmly established Ribera del Duero in the premier league of Spainish wine producing regions. This wine, having spent longer in wood than the Crianza shows the perfect balance that can be achieved between deep dark fruit and spicy, complex oak. Perfect. Just perfect!
VINEYARD
The Duero has a great influence on the soils in the vineyard providing them with sand and gravel over a base of limestone and clays. It has thus formed a well-drained but poor and clean soil with just the right amount of organic matter.
The "Lucía", "Viña Alta" and "Llano Santiago" vineyards are trained in low espalier systems to take advantage of the soil's heat.
The age of the vines range from 15 to 30 years.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Tempranillo
VINIFICATION
Hand-picked from the Pesquera vineyard, the grapes were destemmed and gently crushed.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts at a temperature of between 22º and 27º C and the must is pumped over twice a day. Once the fermentation is complete, the grape skins are pressed.
Malolactic fermentation occurred in oak barrels, half of which were new, from American, French and Spanish forests (80%, 15% & 5% respectively).
The Reserva was matured for twenty-four months in American oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered and spending another 12 months in the bottle before release.
TASTING NOTE
This wine reveals an attractive ripe cherry colour with lively ruby-coloured highlights before delighting with an aromatic nose of well-seasoned fruit, rich hints of cocoa and vanilla. The palate excites with the wood flavours generously wrapped around the fruit but not overpowering it. As a result, it is a tasty and balanced wine.
