TE AWA LEFT FIELD HAWKES BAY SYRAH 2009

This wine was made in the style of a Pinot Noir which makes its depth surprising. Youthful, but with plenty of character this wine shows rich, red fruits on the nose with lovely spicy notes on the palate

VINEYARD
Te Awa is a single estate situated in the Gimblet Gravels area of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand's premium red wine producing area. Hotter than Bordeaux and with similar gravely soils to Graves, it is unsurprising that this region produces fine examples of Bordeaux blends with some exciting Chardonnay and Syrah to boot

The Te Awa site was traditionally used for sheep grazing and other agricultural endeavours, but was built into a leading winery due to its unique soil consistency.

GRAPE VARIETIES
97% Syrah, 3% Viognier

VINIFICATION
The grapes were subject to a 5 day cold soak in open fermentation vessels before before being allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts.

Young wine was drawn off the skins and aged for 9 months in French oak barrels.

TASTING NOTE
Medium-deep purple/red in colour, this youthful wine is full of ripe plum, cherry and floral characters. The palate shows excellent fruit intensity and smooth texture with gently drying tannins. Already approachable even though it will be at its best between 2011 to 2015.
