TE AWA HAWKES BAY CABERNET MERLOT 2007
The Hawkes Bay Cabernet Merlot is the premium Bordeaux Blend of the Te Awa Estate. Silky oak, intoxicating vanilla spice and the ripest of blackcurrants give this wine a comforting and appealing palate.
VINEYARD
Te Awa is a single estate situated in the Gimblet Gravels area of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand's premium red wine producing area. Hotter than Bordeaux and with similar gravely soils to Graves, it is unsurprising that this region produces fine examples of Bordeaux blends with some exciting Chardonnay and Syrah to boot
The Te Awa site was traditionally used for sheep grazing and other agricultural endeavours, but was built into a leading winery due to its unique soil consistency.
Two blocks of Cebernet; Zone 10 for Cabernet Sauvignon and Zone 11 for Cabernet Franc, Zone 6 for the Merlot and the only block of Malbec on the Te Awa estate have contributed to this blend.
GRAPE VARIETIES
43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec
VINIFICATION
Individual parcels of fruit were picked on successive cool mornings. The grapes were de-stemmed and tipped directly in to give tonne open fermenters where they were given a five-day cold soak and allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts. The young wine was then drawn off the skins and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. The wine was then blended and bottled.
TASTING NOTE
The nose suggests graphite, lead and mineral. Silken oak, intoxicating vanilla spice and the ripest of blackcurrants provide a very appealing palate.
