SEGHESIO OLD VINES ZINFANDEL 2004
Seghesio are firmly established in the premier league of Zinfandel producers and the "old vines" is one of their finest. Recipient of numerous medals and 90+ points from the American critics, this wine is layered, elegant and complex along with considerable structure and ageing ability - a stunner!
VINEYARD
Of the Seghesio family's 400 acres of vineyard, half are planted to Zinfandel.
The vines for the "Old Vines" Zinfandel are sourced from old head-pruned vineyards in Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. The average age of the vines is 90 years old.
Seghesio employ aggressive hand canopy management during the growing season, including leaf removal and the tipping of shoots to promote lateral growth for optimal sun exposure. Crop thinning at 75% and 95%
veraison
removes latent, stacked and weak shoot clusters. A wet Spring and warm May produced an abundance of leaves requiring multiple passes through the vineyards to remove leaves and weak shoots, providing the fruit with optimum exposure to sunlight, and saving the crop in September's unsettled weather.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Zinfandel
VINIFICATION
The wine was fermented in open top fermenters using 100% punching down during the period. The must was macerated for a total of twelve days. The resulting wine was barrel-aged for 16 months in 75% French oak, 25% American oak; 33% of which was new.
TASTING NOTE
This wine delivers a rich mouth feel with sufficient acidity to frame the ripe black raspberry and cherry flavors without losing its aromatic freshness. A Deep ruby color, briary aromas of dark fruit and nuances of anise and orange zest. It has an underlying structure and fine tannins that contribute vibrancy. There is sweet raspberry and cherry fruit, enticing acidity, supple tannins and French oak's perfume qualities.
