SELBACH OSTER WEHLENER SONNENUHR KABINETT 2005 SELBACH OSTER WEHLENER SONNENUHR KABINETT 2005

Johannes Selbach clearly desires to make elegant, crisp wines with exceptional aging potential, purity of fruit and the telltale slate mineral character that is part of the typical of his vineyards terroirs. This Kabinett wine, which is becoming rare in the Mosel, offers lovely ripe, pure and delicate wine, with a well balanced (slight) sweetness. 90-95 points from Robert Parker.

VINEYARD
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a 65 ha vineyard in a classic middle Mosel site. The soil consists of weathered blue Devonian slate, which is protected from water stress by lots of underground streams.

The soils produce wines that are clean and elegant, show well when young, but have excellent keeping abilities.

Selbach-Oster produce wines from a variety of sites along the Mosel, but Wehlener Sonnenuhr is regarded as one of their best

GRAPE VARIEITIES
100% Riesling

VINIFICATION
The grapes are hand-harvested, often in two or three passes in the vineyard. They are crushed gently and, using modern pneumatic presses, the clear wine must is racked off its deposit and aged in the traditional 1000-litre oak foudres, with the balance in stainless-steel tanks as well as some fibreglass.

To a large extent, fermentations are the product of indigenous yeasts, fermented in a cool cellar at cool temperatures, although the winery will inoculate if certain wines don't ferment to a satisfactory level of dryness. All fermentations take place in small vats of 1000 -30000 litres in a very cold environment. Selbach likes to age his wines on their fine lees for as long as possible, believing this adds texture and aromatic complexity. Bottling takes place in early spring.

TASTING NOTE
The wine has the delicate feminine charm of Wehlen making it immediately attractive; a pale green-tinged yellow, then musk, spring flowers and soft apricots.
