SAUVIGNON BLANC IGP 2009 VIGNERONS DE VALENÇAY
This wine comes from the Valençay co-operative in the Loire Valley and is a Indication de Géographique Protégée wine (the replacement for Vin de Pays). It is made by talented winemaker Sébastien Vaillant and is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. It is dry yet aromatic with good depth on the mid palate that makes it highly quaffable. It has a fragrant nettley character and crisp acidity on the finish.
VINEYARD
The tiny cooperative has 40 hectares of vineyards in total. Sébastien Vaillant and friend Damien Boisseur are the only two members of the Vignerons de Valençay co-operative, making it the smallest of its kind in the Loire and possibly in France. Their 40 hectares of vines are located on the hillsides surrounding the River Cher, and share much of the same Silex (flint) soils that make the finest of the Loire's wines.
The Sauvignon Blanc vines for this wine are located on the flint/clay soils of the Loire Valley, in the Valençay area. The flint in particular imparts the characteristic mineral quality; patches of sandy/lime topsoils over very stony and clay subsoils add richness and depth.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Sauvignon Blanc
VINIFICATION
Sébastien transferred the grapes to the winery as soon as possible after picking to minimise damage to the aromatic Sauvignon grapes. The grapes were pressed immediately in a pneumatic press, followed by a cool, slow fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to maximise perfume and fruit character. Only stainless steel was used.
The wine was released when young and fresh. No extended ageing or oxidative influence.
TASTING NOTE
Lively gooseberry and citrus aromatics on the nose. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with long, refreshing acidity and good lemon and orange fruit intensity. The mineral notes and elegant feel place this wine amongst some of the best from the classic Sauvignon Blanc vineyards of the Loire.
