S C PANNELL MCLAREN VALE SHIRAZ/ GRENACHE 2007 S C PANNELL MCLAREN VALE SHIRAZ/ GRENACHE 2007

Stephen Pannell is one of the best and brightest of the new generation of Australian winemakers, yet this is only the third vintage of his own label. He spent the decade prior to 2004 working as chief red wine maker for Hardy's before striking out on his own as a consultant. This wine has been listed by Matthew Jukes as of the 100 Best Australian Wines.

ONLY AVAILABLE IN AN UNSLPLIT CASE OF SIX

VINEYARD
Stephen Pannell's region of choice for red wines is McLaren Vale, where he can work with old vine Grenache and Shiraz.

The Shiraz for these wines came from a 90 year old vineyard in McLaren Flat, an area he got to know well during the time he was based at the Hardy's winery in the area.

The Grenache is from bush vines over 60 years old, on deep sand with a North Westerly exposure. Stephen feels that the best McLaren Vale Grenache comes from these soils.

GRAPE VARIETIES
67% Shiraz, 33% Grenache

VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand harvested and crushed together as the co-fermentation of Shiraz and Grenache results in a wine with better integration and complexity of the characteristics of the two varieties.

No enzyme or yeast was added to the ferment. The ferment was hand plunged to ensure gentle tannin extraction. 20% new French oak was used.

The wine was matured for 16 months in 500 litre oak barrels and racked twice during this time.

TASTING NOTE
The Shiraz brings traditional McLaren Vale rich plum and spice characters, while the Grenache is elegantly perfumed showing characteristic red berries and savoury, earthy tannins. The two combine brilliantly in this pitch-perfect blend.
