LOUIS ROEDERER CRISTAL CHAMPAGNE 2004 LOUIS ROEDERER CRISTAL CHAMPAGNE 2004

Louis Roederer's Cristal now established as one the most highly sought-after of all Champagne brands. The wine itself is full-bodied, powerful but balanced If stored correctly, and most people can't keep it that long, it will develop a complexity that fully justifies its price tag and enormous reputation.

VINEYARD
Roederer own 200 hectares (500 acres) from the three main growing zones in Champagne:

The Cote des Blancs: 75ha of Chardonnay grapes, which provide an elegant, smooth freshness.
The Montagne de Reims: 65ha of Pinot Noir grapes, which give, power and structure.
The Vallee de la Marne: 60ha of Pinot Noir grapes which give fruitiness and roundness.

These vineyards are located in the finest villages, such as Ay, Verzenay, Vervy, Avize and Cramant where the plots rank between 95% and 100% on the official classification scale for the 'crus'.

Roederer source two thirds of their grape needs from their own vineyards, which is the largest proportion of any champagne house and enables them to have strict control over their raw materials. For example

Roederer 'green harvest' in July to reduce the amount of grapes and thus improve quality.

The harvest takes place usually mid September and takes around 15 days. 600 people work in the Louis Roederer vineyards, harvesting the grapes by hand.

The grapes are then transported quickly and efficiently to one of Louis Roederer's three pressing centres, which are in the heart of its vineyards.

GRAPE VARIETIES
55% Pinot Noir / 45% Chardonnay

VINIFICATION
Cristal is produced using only the finest vintages from crus guaranteed to originate from the Louis Roederer vineyard. The wine is left to mature on yeast for five years and spends a minimum period of six months in the cellar after disgorgement.

TASTING NOTE
This luxurious wine has brilliant clarity combined with an ultra-fine, persistent, soft effervescence. The immediate aroma is highly expressive of the elegance and precision of Chardonnay; white fruit, sweet pollen, fine citrus fruit and very pure minerality. The palate is full and creamy, revealing a fine concentration of stone fruits; nectarine, fresh apricot and peach. This silky, textured concentration, which is both dense and soft - and typical of great Pinot Noirs - is intervowen with a sophisticated touch of acidity, bringing the wine alive with minerality.
