RIDGE VINEYARDS MONTE BELLO CHARDONNAY 2007

This is the latest release of the Ridge Vineyards' top Chardonnay, the Monte Bello. It is a Chardonnay that will benefit from a year or two in bottle, and develop fully over another six or seven. Another top class wine from Ridge.

VINEYARD
The vineyard is located on Monte Bello Ridge, in northern California's Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking the San Francisco peninsula at elevations of 1400 to 1900 ft. The area has a cool, mountainous climate somewhere between the Mediterranean and Maritime Zones with a principally south/southeast aspect

The soils are composed of decomposing Franciscan green stone mixed with clay, laid over fractured limestone.

The vines are 8 to 28 years old and are head-trained and cane pruned (on vertical trellis). 74% of the vines are not irrigated, the remaining being fed with drip irrigation.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Chardonnay

VINIFICATION
The grapes were harvested between 19 September and 3 October 2007 at an average Brix of 24.6°.

The grapes whole-cluster pressed and then the juice was aerated and racked to barrel for natural primary and secondary fermentation.

All ten of the Monte Bello Chardonnay vineyard parcels make up this wine.

The wine was aged in for sixteen months in 82% air-dried American oak and 18% French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, 41% were one or two years old and 19% were three years old.

TASTING NOTE
Intense medley of pear, apple, fig, pineapple. Citrus blossom, crème brulée, crushed rock/mineral, lemon zest. Rich, oily texture. Deep flavors. Firm acidity balanced by sweet fruit.
