VINEYARD
The vineyard is located in bench and hills separating Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys, just north of Healdsburg, Sonoma County. The vineyards are at an elevation of 80 to 160 ft with a south-easterly exposure. The climate gives occasional morning fog, warm days with frequent evening breezes.
The soil is varied, with a predominance of gravelly clay; gravelly clay loam on hillsides. The vines are head trained (no trellis), spur pruned and give a yield of 1½ to 3 tons per acre.
For the 2008 vintage, a warm spring and temperate summer brought
veraison
By the third week of July. The harvest of the younger Zinfandel began in the last days of August. A week later a heat wave ripened all of the remaining fruit - requiring non-stop picking to avoid over ripeness.
GRAPE VARIETIES
74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane
VINIFICATION
The grapes were harvested between 28 August -16 September at an average Brix of 24.9°.
The primary and secondary (malolactic) fermentation was undertaken using natural-yeasts. The pulp was pressed after 9 days.
The wine was then aged in 100% air-dried American oak 20% of which were new, 55% under three years old and 25% four to five years old for 15 months.
TASTING NOTE
Very bright mid-ruby colour. The nose exudes bright and fresh red fruit with a distinct liquorice, tar and spicy oak backbone. The palate burst with very fresh, bright red autumn fruits, sweet vanilla from the oak, some smoke and elegant and fine grained tannins. That distinct liquorice character comes through again in the long and complex finish.
This is a very fine Lytton Springs, showing a great deal of elegance and restraint. It will offer a attractive drinking for up to 10 years.
