RIDGE VINEYARDS MONTE BELLO 2007
This is the latest public release of Ridge's flagship wine Monte Bello. There's not a lot more I can say about this fantastic wine that hasn't been said already, but it rates, for me at least, as one of the finest wines to come out of California and ranks amongst the best in the world.
VINEYARD
The vineyard is located on Monte Bello Ridge, in northern California's Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking the San Francisco peninsula at elevations of 1300 to 2660 ft. The area has a cool, mountainous climate somewhere between the Mediterranean and Maritime Zones with a principally south/southeast aspect
The soils are composed of decomposing Franciscan rock mixed with clay, laid over fractured limestone.
The vines are head-trained and cane pruned (on vertical trellis). No irrigation is practiced for the mature vines. The vineyard yields 1.19 tons per acre
For the 2007 vintage, a mild February brought early budbreak, and ideal conditions through spring allowed the vines to set a full crop. In late September, however, cold weather halted ripening. October was wet and wintry; then, on the twenty-third, temperatures soared into the high eighties. The grapes rebounded quickly, developing incredible intensity.
GRAPE VARIETIES
79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc.
VINIFICATION
The grapes were harvested between 8 October - 8 November at an average Brix of 24.1°.
The grapes then underwent gentle destemming, with no crushing. The primary and secondary (malolactic) fermentation was undertaken using natural-yeasts. The wine was pressed at seven to ten days.
The wine was then aged in 96% new, air-dried American oak and 4% new French oak for 18 months.
TASTING NOTE
The wine displays a cassis, violets and blackberry on the nose with notes of wet stone, espresso and sweet oak. Initially the palate bursts with ripe fruit, liquorice and complex minerals. This is a youthful and lively wine with firm acid and elegant chalky tannins.
