RIDGE VINEYARDS GEYSERVILLE 2008
The 2008 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville continues Ridge's tradition of making elegant and complex wines that have beautiful poise and balance. These are not big blockbuster Californian examples, but wines that show pure, restrained fruit and bags of complexity. This is a well structured and attractive Geyserville.
VINEYARD
The vineyard is located on the western edge of Alexander Valley, Sonoma County at an elevation of around 200 ft with a southern exposure. The climate gives occasional morning fog, warm days with frequent evening breezes.
The soil is a gravelly loam. The vines are head trained (no trellis), spur pruned and give a yield of 1 to 3 tons per acre.
GRAPE VARIETIES
72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah, 2% Mataro (Mourvèdre)
VINIFICATION
2008 was a year characterised by below average rainfall and a relatively uneventful growing season, with no sustained heat spells.
The grapes were harvested between 23 August - 1 October at an average Brix of 25.3°.
The primary and secondary (malolactic) fermentation was undertaken using natural-yeasts, with a limited use of a submerged cap and limited pump-overs. The pulp was pressed after six days.
The wine was then aged in 100% air-dried American oak 20% of which were new, 31% under two years old and 49% four and five years old for 14 months.
TASTING NOTE
Bright mid-ruby colour. The nose shows all the bright and fresh red fruits of the Lytton but with more black fruit backbone. The palate is very clean and fresh with a backbone of savoury spice and lovely balancing acidity. The tannins are very fine again with a long and spicy finish.
There's more structure in the Geyserville than the Lytton and hence it's more likely to be a keeper - probably lasting more like 15 years. It still makes an attractive drink now though.
