CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES CAIRANNE 2004 DOMAINE RICHAUD CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES CAIRANNE 2004 DOMAINE RICHAUD

This wine comes from a relatively new winery and the wines are hugely popular in France, selling out almost immediately after release. The winemaker works to avoid over extraction, which so often affects wines from the South of France, giving fresh summer fruit flavours and a robust structure.

VINEYARD
The vineyards cover 30 hectares outside the village of Cairanne, on the road to Rasteau in the Cotes du Rhone. The vines are bush trained and low yielding and range from 40-70 years old on average.
Yields are approximately 30-35 hl/ha. The soil in these vineyards is rocky, on sub-soil from the Miocene period. The grapes for the Cairanne are grown in Chantal, Combes, Cros de Romet and
Garrigues vineyards.

GRAPE VARIETIES
67% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 3% Carignan

VINIFICATION
20% of the wine was fermented in tank and the rest in oak barrels held in Richaud's underground cellar. Richaud never uses new oak. The wine remained in the cellar until bottling without fining or filtration to keep as much of the fruit character as possible.

TASTING NOTE
Intense deep red in colour, the 2005 Cairanne has a powerful perfume, with notes of freshly cooked cherries, blackberries and red summer fruits. On the palate, it is robust but maintains an elegant backbone of tannins and well-tempered acidity. Full-bodied, with a fresh finish.

Per Bottle £13.49
