REX HILL WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR 2009 REX HILL WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR 2009

Rex Hill is one of the leading wineries in Oregon, with their Pinot Noir being recognised as some of the finest from the USA. This wines has elegant and subtle red cherry and cranberry notes on the nose, with a touch of spice and rose petal on the palate.

VINEYARD
Rex Hill used to be a rundown fruit and nut drying farm of all things, before Paul Hart and Jan Jacobsen arrived 1982 and planted Pinot Noir vines, with Chardonnay and Pinot Gris following on as the winery became more established. The winery owns some of the oldest vines in the Willamette Valley and the wines are farmed in an environmentally friendly way as possible using biodynamic farming and sustainable business practices.

The Rex Hill Wiallamette Valley Pinot Noir 2009 is sourced from multiple vineyard sites around the Willamette Valley including Jacob Hart, Sims, Carabella, La Colina, Shea and others.

Spring blossomed in 2009 with very warm weather boosting the vines into early budbreak. Summer was warm and occasionally punctuated by rain until becoming very hot, with record highs. The first part of August was cooled with rain followed by sun until Labour Day, when a late summer heatwave pushed the temperatures back into the 90's.

There was a long ripening season in 2009, leading to considerable green harvesting to keep yields at an average of 2.5 tons/ acre.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir

VINIFICATION
The grapes are handpicked, hand sorted and hand craft our wines using small fermenters and small French oak barrels and draw on years of experience in the Willamette Valley

The wine was then aged 10 months in: 28% new barrels, 35% 1-year old barrels, 37% 2-year or 3-year old barrels before being bottled in September 2010.

TASTING NOTE
The 2009 Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a classic example of Oregon Pinot Noir from a vintage that gave intense fruit and intense flavours. Initial perfumed aromatics redolent of violets and roses, black currants, blueberries, black raspberries and wild strawberries are joined by suggestions of tobacco leaf, clean earth, dried fruit, smoke and spice as the wine opens. Some whole-cluster fermentation contributes dark fruit, tea and savory aromatic characteristics. The attack is rich with beautifully ripe tannins and flavours of red fruits and the blue fruits which are a hallmark of the vintage. The lithe mid-palate finds additional complexity with a strong, lingering finish that includes minerality, graphite and spices. This wine has the intensity, structure and concentration to age and become more complex over the next 15 to 20 years.
