QUNITA DE LA ROSA LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT 2004
LBV port is bottled two to four years after Vintage Port to provide a top flight port which may be drunk earlier. Quinta de la Rosa's 2004 LBV, bottled in April 2008, is deep coloured and well structured with hints of berry fruits. It is a 'traditional' LBV which has been bottled straight from the tonel without filtering or fining. It may throw a sediment and if so can be decanted
VINEYARD
La Rosa is a family-owned and run Quinta near Pinhão - a prime Port-producing area in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro in northern Portugal. La Rosa has always produced fantastic Ports.
Broadly the Douro region is formed of schistous rock and it produces the unique characteristics of Port wine. Generally, the vines are trained double guyot on the terraces but cordon unilateral (or single guyot) for 'vinha ao alto'. All the vines are grafted onto American rootstock.
GRAPE VARIETIES
Traditional port varieties, mainly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz from La Rosa's A graded vineyards.
VINIFICATION
The 2004 winter and spring were extremely dry so that the vines suffered from water stress. It rained heavily at the beginning of September which enabled the vine to recuperate and reinitiated the maturation process. The rest of September was hot and dry resulting in ideal vintage conditions. Wines from 2004 tend to be very concentrated, with high alcohol levels and good acidities. Some grapes were trodden in temperature controlled granite
lagares
; the rest were pumped over in small stainless steel vats.
The wine was then matured in large wooden casks called
"tonels"
in Rosa's own lodge for 4-6 years until ready for bottling, The 2004 LBV was bottled in April 2008. Unlike most port shippers, all products are stored and bottled in the Douro (at La Rosa and not Porto), allowing full traceability and ensuring quality from grape to bottle.
TASTING NOTE
2004 was an excellent, generally declared vintage year which was perfect for LBVs as well. A lively, profound ruby colour with initial young, fresh aromas of wild berries and roses along with some sweeter notes reminiscent of a cake shop. The palate is vigourous and strong, with a seductive roundness and more-ish quality encouraging you to take another sip. The port has extraordinary structure and tannins giving it length and guaranteeing its longevity.
