PROMESSA NEGROAMARO 2005 PROMESSA NEGROAMARO 2005

Made from a classic grape from Puglia in Southern Italy, the Negroamaro offers a interesting insight into the quality of the wines now being made there. This wine offers great value and unusual drinking, giving a highly perfumed blackberry tinged wine.

VINEYARD
Puglia (basically the heel of the boot of Italy) still has old head trained vineyards, and a history of grape growing in harmony with nature - everything necessary for top quality wines. Some of the techniques that are being "discovered" in the vineyards today, such as sustained agriculture, canopy management and minimal pesticide use, have been going on quietly in Puglia for the past century.

The vines are quite old; most are the original plantings after phylloxera and range from 70 to 100 years old. Typical of many great vineyards they are small bush vines, called "alberello" and are non-irrigated. The soils range from red to very deep coffee brown on a calcareous base. Summer days are warm and sunny, but the proximity of the seas renders nights quite cool. The climate is classically Mediterranean as Puglia is a long finger stretching into the sea.

100% Negroamaro

VINIFICATION
Winemaker Mark Shannon kept the winemaking simple, in order to keep the Negroamaro flavours pure in the bottle. The grapes are fermented cool and the wines are finished naturally without stabilisation or manipulation, as Mark feels that this is the only way to bottle the true flavour of Puglia. No barrel aging, no blending, just pure juicy Negroamaro.

TASTING NOTE
When handled with care Negroamaro has a very slight floral note, unlike any other red grape, with hints of rose and the blossoms of blackberry vines.
