DOMAINE DU POUJOL PROTEUS 2005
The Domaine du Poujol is situated to the North West of Montpellier in the South of France. This
Vin de Pays
wine is made for drinking young and fresh. There is good, soft structure, but the wine has an delicious black fruit palate and excellent length.
VINEYARD
The south-facing hillside vineyards have a variety of soil types, but are predominantly limestone-based, with a higher than usual magnesium content which helps retain freshness in the wines. The microclimate at the domaine is cooler than average for the Languedoc and benefits from mitigating breezes from the Cevennes. Winters are mild with adequate rainfall.
Grapes for the Proteus are grown in several parcels at the top and foot of a south-facing hillside, with clay-limestone soils.
GRAPE VARIETIES
50% Merlot, 30% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
VINIFICATION
Harvested between Sept 11 and Oct 5, the grapes were destemmed and fermented with their natural yeasts. Merlot had a long maceration (28 days) to give structure to the blend, whereas for the rest of the varieties, maceration was kept short (6-14 days) with gentle punching down of the cap to extract juicy tannins and emphasize red berry fruit characteristics. The Merlot was barrel aged for 10 months to round out the tannins before blending with the rest of the varieties held in tank. The wine was bottled unfiltered.
TASTING NOTE
Good colour with youthful, red berry fruits on the nose together with some spicy notes, this is an attractive, approachable red, with supple ripe tannins, soft easy structure and juicy red fruit characters on the finish. The Carignan and Cinsault add spice and interest to the blend.
