DOMAINE DU POUJOL PODIO ALTO 2004 DOMAINE DU POUJOL PODIO ALTO 2004

The Domaine du Poujol is situated to the North West of Montpellier in the South of France. This Coteaux de Languedoc AC wine is the flagship of the Domaine and shows admirably the sort of quality that can be achieved in the South of France. A dark coloured wine with an intense and spicy nose and a full bodied palate of red fruit and spice.

VINEYARD
The south-facing hillside vineyards have a variety of soil types, but are predominantly limestone-based, with a higher than usual magnesium content which helps retain freshness in the wines. The microclimate at the domaine is cooler than average for the Languedoc and benefits from mitigating breezes from the Cevennes. Winters are mild with adequate rainfall.

Grapes for the Podio Alto are grown in six, predominantly south facing, rocky hillside vineyards, situated at 100-200m above sea level. The Grenache vines are 25 years old, the Mourvèdre was planted in 2001 and the Syrah in 1985 and 1997.

GRAPE VARIETIES
45% Syrah, 35% Mouvèdre, 20% Grenache

VINIFICATION
All grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented with wild yeasts. Punching down was used to extract good colour and supple tannins during fermentation which lasted 12-18 days. Ageing took place in 4-6 year old 500L French oak barrels for 12 months before the final blending. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered in Feb 2006.

TASTING NOTE
Deep coloured with an intense perfume of dark red fruit, plums and liquorice. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate, the wine has great structure while remaining approachable at the same time. Supple tannins support the ripe fruit character which continues through to the finish.
