PIEROPAN SOAVE 2009
Pieropan have been a flag bearer for the Soave DOC for several decades, being an island of excellence in a sea of mediocrity. After almost 80 years of bottling Soave Classico, Pieropan reluctantly abandoned the Classico appellation from 2008, believing it was time to move to a stelvin closure to protect the aromatic characters of his wine. This wine is lightly perfumed, clean and fresh with aromas of almond blossom characteristic of good Soave Classico and a palate with lemon/almond notes and a zesty freshness on the finish.
VINEYARD
The soil is clay-basalt and volcanic in origin. Yields are low, and the vines south facing. The vineyards are planted primarily with Garganega and the now rare Trebbiano di Soave (no relation to its more prolific Tuscan namesake).
No pesticides or chemicals are used in the vineyards.
GRAPE VARIETIES
85% Garganega, 15% Trebbiano di Soave
VINIFICATION
A wet winter helped to restore water reserves and ensured a good start to the growing season, with what Pieropan described as luxuriant canopies and leaves that were green and rich in chlorophyll.
The growing season in general was uneventful, with hot spells interspersed by cool periods. August was particularly hot, with little relief in the second half of the month but fortunately, a little rain in the middle of September brought welcome relief to the late ripening Garganega, and allowed the vines in the Classico zone to recover from the hot, dry August.
The harvest for Trebbiano di Soave started in the middle of September, and was followed by Garganega in early October, finishing for Pieropan at La Rocca on 20 October.
The grapes were hand-picked over more than one session and then pressed and the juice separated from the skins. The must settled and clarified before a slow fermentation in temperature controlled cement vats at 20ºC. The wine aged in large oak casks until bottling under stelvin closure in the spring.
TASTING NOTE
Light gold in colour with a lovely fresh, expressive nose, with perfumes of white flowers, almond blossom and a touch of citrus. On the palate it has great balance between rounded, ripe fruit and a fresh, clean acidity. It is long and fragrant, with the characteristic almond pastry notes on the finish.
