DOMAINE PFISTER RIESLING 'SILBERBERG' 2005
The Pfister estate covers 10 hectares of vineyard spread across 40 different parcels, primarily in Dahlenheim, in the northern part of Alsace, about 20km west of Strasbourg. The Riesling displays characteristics of lemon, lime and a good minerality. Domaine Pfister The 2005 Riesling Silberberg won Gold in the 2007 Decanter World Wine Awards.
VINEYARD
The vineyards are planted with 26% Riesling, 24% Gewürtztraminer and 18% Pinot Gris. Grapes for this wine are grown in the 'lieux dit' of Silberberg which has been producing wine since the 9th Century. Soils here are chalky clay, with limestone pebbles on a Muschelkalk base. The vineyards are gently sloping and face south/southeast. The vines are 21 years old on average.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Riesling
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand picked on October 12th and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged on fine lees until bottling eleven months later.
TASTING NOTE
2005 was a dry summer, producing small bunches of late picked, concentrated grapes. Pale yellow in colour, with a lemon/lime hint, it is intense and perfumed, with notes of citrus fruit and a salty tang. On the palate, it is powerful and rich, with the ripe fruit balanced by a limey freshness and a long, minerally finish.
