DOMAINE PFISTER GEWÜRZTRAMINER 'SILBERBERG' 2005
The Pfister estate covers 10 hectares of vineyard spread across 40 different parcels, primarily in Dahlenheim, in the northern part of Alsace, about 20km west of Strasbourg. The Gewürtztraminer is beautifully perfumed, with charateristic rose petals and spice. The palate is ripe and elegant with a slight minerality on the finish.
VINEYARD
The vineyards are planted with 26% Riesling, 24% Gewürtztraminer and 18% Pinot Gris. Grapes for this wine are grown in the 'lieux dit' of Silberberg which has been producing wine since the 9th Century. Soils here are chalky clay, with limestone pebbles on a Muschelkalk base. The vineyards are gently sloping and face south/southeast. The vines are 21 years old on average.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Gewürtztraminer
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand picked on October 10th and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged on fine lees until bottling eleven months later.
TASTING NOTE
2005 was a dry summer producing small bunches of late picked, concentrated grapes. Bright gold in colour, on the nose it is spicy and fresh, with a characteristic perfume of rose petals. On the palate, although ripe and round, it is balanced and elegant, with good intensity and a freshness on the finish.
With age, the Turkish delight perfume will change to a more mineral quality.
