DOMAINE ANDRÉ OSTERTAG RIESLING GRAND CRU MUENCHBERG 2005 DOMAINE ANDRÉ OSTERTAG RIESLING GRAND CRU MUENCHBERG 2005

Translated as the "Monk's Hill', Muenchberg is one of Alsace's top sites, first planted in the twelfth century by the Cistercian order. The wine, made by André Ostertag is anything but a run-of-the-mill and he has tried to coax the ultimate expression from the varieties and his various vineyard . The wine offers a lovely rich and spicy nose and palate, with stone fruits, honey and a vivacious acidity.

VINEYARD
Based in Epfig, Ostertag is a believer in the advantages of sharply restricted yields, limiting his wines to only around 50 hectolitres per hectare - a different league from the 120hl/ha seen
in some neighbouring domaines. The resulting wines have concentration and immense personality.

This fairly young domaine, which began life in the 1960s, has 13 hectares of vines split among 75 plots in five villages and is run along biodynanic principles.

The Grand Cru "Muenchberg" comprises pink shale, quartz and sandstone. This 250 million year south-facing vineyard warms up quickly and holds the heat to enable full ripening. 2005 was an excellent vintage with the potential for long ageing

GRAPE VARIEITIES
100% Riesling

VINIFICATION
All grapes are handpicked before undergoing a pre-fermentaion maceration to extract futher flavour.

After a traditional fermentation the wine is aged in barrels for a limited period (in some instances in new barrels) to add body and complexity oto the wine - a techqiue little used in Alsace. The wines undergo a stablising filteration before bottling.

TASTING NOTE
The aromas of musk and brown spices rise from the glass of 2005 Riesling Muenchberg. In the mouth, musky florality persists along with rich peach, honey, and offsetting grapefruit rind bitterness and peppery pungency, in a waxy matrix. A spicy, herbal, honeyed, peachy finish is shot through with vivacious citricity and pungent, peppery, ore-like minerality reminiscent of similarly ancient volcanic terroir in the Wachau. This should keep on improving for at least 9-12 years
