DOMAINE ANDRÉ OSTERTAG RIESLING CLOS MATHIS 2002
André Ostertag is anything but a run-of-the-mill Alsace winemaker. To some traditionalists he is an eccentric, constantly tinkering and experimenting with new styles that break the mould, but in reality he simply seeks to coax the ultimate expression from the varieties and his various vineyard
. This is not a typical dilute Alsatian wine, but offers intense flavours, some bottle age and immense complexity.
VINEYARD
Based in Epfig, Ostertag is a believer in the advantages of sharply restricted yields, limiting his wines to only around 50 hectolitres per hectare - a different league from the 120hl/ha seen
in some neighbouring domaines. The resulting wines have concentration and immense personality.
This fairly young domaine, which began life in the 1960s, has 13 hectares of vines split among 75 plots in five villages and is run along biodynanic principles. The
Clos Mathis
wine is sourced from vineyards alongside Grand Cru Geisberg.
GRAPE VARIEITIES
100% Riesling
VINIFICATION
All grapes are handpicked before undergoing a pre-fermentaion maceration to extract futher flavour.
After a traditional fermentation the wine is aged in barrels for a limited period (in some instances in new barrels) to add body and complexity oto the wine - a techqiue little used in Alsace. The wines undergo a stablising filteration before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
This was a wine of both depth and finesse. Quite dry and minerally, with a clean palate and nuances of orange rind, white peach, mild citrus. Its petrol notes are in perfect harmony - never obtrusive, easing in gently a little past mid-mouth and on to the finish. Extremely well-knit and complex.
