NYETIMBER BLANC DE BLANCS 2003 NYETIMBER BLANC DE BLANCS 2003

Nyetimber aims to make the finest English sparkling wine, one to rival the very best in the world, including Champagne. This wine is their Blanc de Blancs; that is made solely from the Chardonnay grape. Kept for five years on the yeast lees, this wine has a complexity and body that can only be achieved through long evolution along with an elegance only matched by top quality Champagne.

VINEYARD
Several different clones and rootstocks were selected to spread the harvest period and widen the range of flavours in the wines. The vineyards benefit from a specific microclimate, planted as they are on the north side of the Downs to protect them from the southerly coastal winds. Soils here are chalky and sandy similar in composition to the soils of Champagne. Due to the marginal climate a longer hang time is necessary to allow for better accumulation of flavours.

In 2003, the start of the growing season brought average conditions, the summer was warm, especially in June and August with some hot days. However, the end of the season was cooler than average, especially in October and drier, with hardly any rain. The fruit was hand-picked in the middle of October.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Chardonnay

VINIFICATION
After harvest the grapes were loaded into one of four Coquard Presses imported from Epernay. The computer-controlled programmes are altered according to the vintage and different varieties to allow for variations in skin condition and bunch density.

The must was transferred into stainless-steel tanks with each vineyard section kept separate. Fermentation lasted approximately12 days for the base wines from which the wines destined for the final blend were selected. The second fermentation took place in bottle and it then spent five years on its lees before riddling and disgorging and at least six months in bottle before release.

TASTING NOTE
Golden colour with delicate bubbles. Classic aromas of peach and citrus, along with floral notes and almond pastry characters fill the nose. The wine starts with lovely lemon and lime flavours. The bubbles and texture of the wine create a nice blend of body, balance and freshness. Classic and elegant.
