CHARLES MELTON BAROSSA SHIRAZ 2001 CHARLES MELTON BAROSSA SHIRAZ 2001

Charles Melton's wines are rarely of the "blockbuster" Barossa Valley type, but show more finesse and balance than most. This wine, made from very old vines displays dark, black fruit and well integrated oak and spiciness, but is not in any way overpowering - great complexity and freshness.

VINEYARD
All grapes are dry grown and harvested from the winery's own 50 acres of prime Barossa vineyard land, as well as from a select group of grape growers.

Yields are extremely low with often only one tonne to the acre, and the vineyards are truly old with many exceeding 80 years.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Shiraz

VINIFICATION
A mixture of whole bunch, uncrushed but de-stemmed fruit as well as traditional crushed and de-stemmed fruit was used in the making of this wine. Some pigeage and hand plunging used with normal pumping over. The wine was fermented using the Montrachet yeast strain used and nearly all of the pressings were added back. It had a 7-10 day fermentation at 18-28 º Celsius.

A combination of French and American oak barriques (25% new each year) were selected to provide an oak balance in the resulting wine. No fining agents are used in the production of the wine.

TASTING NOTE
This is a deep, almost black wine with an elegant, medium-bodied nature. There is texture and structure; with fine, intense black fruits on the palate and well integrated alcohol and oak. The black fruit nature of this wine lingers on well into the long finish.
