MARQUIS DE SALSES VIOGNIER 2006 MARQUIS DE SALSES VIOGNIER 2006

This is a rich but nicely balanced Viognier from the Rivesaltes Co-Operative in the South of France. Made by Alana McGettigan, assistant to "flynig winemaker" Matt Thompson, it offers lovely peachy fruit flavours, with a crisp acidity to keep everything refreshing.

VINEYARD
The fruit for this wine was taken from a single vineyard on the plains surrounding the picturesque village of Salses le Château. Soils in this area are generally clay-based, with some limestone.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Viognier

VINIFICATION
The grapes for this wine were selected specifically from a single vineyard and were all hand-picked. The fruit was pressed as soon as it reached the winery, in order to retain as much of the primary fruit flavours as possible. The wine was made from the first press juice and was kept cool as it was settled. The clear juice was inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation took place at about 13°C and was allowed to reach 20°C towards the end of fermentation. The wine was racked off the lees soon after the end of fermentation. After a light fining, the wine was prepared for bottling.

TASTING NOTE
Bright, light yellow in colour, this wine is fresh and aromatic on the nose, with a lightly floral perfume. On the palate, it has some of the characteristic Viognier flavours, with hints of apricots and white peaches. Fresh and unoaked to accentuate its youthful exuberance, it finishes clean and zippy.
