MARQUIS DE SALSES SYRAH 2006
This is a lovely juicy Syrah from the Rivesaltes Co-Operative in the South of France. Made by Alana McGettigan, assistant to "flying winemaker" Matt Thompson, it offers a forward and approachable style with a great soft black fruit character.
VINEYARD
The fruit for this wine was taken from a selection of vineyards on the plains and hills surrounding the picturesque village of Salses le Château. Soils in this area are generally clay-based, with some limestone.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Syrah
VINIFICATION
The grapes for this wine were selected specifically from some of the premium vineyards in the area, and were mostly hand harvested.
At the winery the grapes were de-stemmed and crushed before maceration in temperature controlled tanks for less than 24 hours. The musts were inoculated with selected yeast strains, and fermented at temperatures up to 34°C. During fermentation, manual pumping over took place to extract good colour and supple tannins.
After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 6 months before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
Deeply coloured, with perfumes of ripe, juicy red and black summer fruit, this is a deliciously forward, approachable wine, with rounded tannins supporting the spicy fruit and a hint of blackberries on the finish.
Per Bottle £5.99
