MAESTRO MERLOT 2002 by ROBIN TEDDER
This wine comes from Robin Tedder MW of Glengiun in the Hunter Valley. It provides a balance between the rich, opulent "fruit bomb" style of Merlot from California, with the more structured Bordeaux style. It provides a lovely, silky wine to enjoy now or over the next 5 years.
VINEYARD
Tedder made a Merlot in 97 and 98 from a site at 850 metres under Mt Canobolas, but in 99 and 2000 a combination of rain, hail and poor ripening led them in search of a more suitable site. From the 2001 vintage onwards he has secured Merlot from a superbly positioned vineyard at 600 metres of altitude, 15 kms away from the mountain on a NE facing slope. He believes Merlot to be very well suited to the terroir with 35 deg C at lunchtime often followed by 12 to 15 deg C at midnight prior to vintage. The soils are gravely clay & red basalt and yields are modest (2.5 tpa) with a long growing season. North East slope. 640m elevation, continental climate. From the Orange vineyard this is his 5th Merlot vintage
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Merlot
VINIFICATION
After fermentation in small open top fermenters the wine was left on skins for 2 days before transfer to French barriques (25% new) for 12 months. This Merlot was aged in bottle for 6 months prior to release.
TASTING NOTE
This wine balances the rich ripe Merlot fruit characters of top Californian styles with the leaner more structured style of Bordeaux. It neatly treads the line between blockbuster and over-refinement, with the fruit cake aromas, mouthwatering acidity, layers of silky tannins and structure which are classic hallmarks of the variety. This wine will drink now and or keep to 5 years.
