R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA VIÑA TONDONIA RIOJA TINTO RESERVA 2001 R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA VIÑA TONDONIA RIOJA TINTO RESERVA 2001

I admit I'd forgotten just how good the wines from the very traditional Bodega of R. López de Heredia actually are. These are wines that are raised slowly; very slowly and as such take on a unique and beguiling complexity that is rarely found in the wine world today. This is a hugely traditional Rioja Reserva and a super reminder to why we all love Rioja in the first place - splendid!

VINEYARD
Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta founded Viña Tondonia in the years 1913-14. Tondonia was to become the bodega´s most famous vineyard and product. Viña Tondonia is a beautiful vineyard of over 100 hectares, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most typical Rioja wines are grown.

The Tondonia vineyard has to be is the most spectacular in Haro. Situated in a shell-like depression next to the River Ebro which serves as a border with Rioja Alavesa (the part of the Rioja appellation region belonging to the Basque Country), it is characterised by poplar trees. The soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone. The vineyards, cared for with enthusiasm and love, cover a total area of 170 hectares and produce an average annual yield of some 800,000 kg of grapes. Grapes from Viña Tondonia are always used in making the highest quality wines. The first "Reserva" was bottled by the founder as long ago as 1890.

GRAPE VARIETIES
75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho, 10% Graciano and Mazuelo

VINIFICATION
The harvest started on the 15th October and it took place with very good weather lasting 21 days finishing on 29th October. The grapes showed a good development of fruit and sugars.

The must was fermented in large, 240 hectolitre oak vats using naturally occurring yeasts and with regular pumping over.

Once wine had been through both alcoholic and malolatic fermentation processes and the sediment or lees were removed, the wine was then aged in 225 litre Bordeaux oak barrels for 6 years and was racked twice per year during this process, before being rested in the bottle, unfiltered, before release.

TASTING NOTE
The Viña Tondonia Tinto Reserva 2001 has a vibrant red colour with tinges of amber. The nose has a light fresh texture with notes of vanilla and dried berry aromas. On the palate, the wine is rich, very dry, smooth, and developed with firm tannins and good balance. The wine blends fruit and spice, a little meatiness with vanillia and earthy richness.
