LIBERTAD SHIRAZ/ MALBEC 2007
This unusual blend comes from a well known Argentinean wine company, but this label is not in the supermarkets or big chains. It offers great value for money everyday - a rich, full red that is just crying out for a rare steak or rich winter stew. Lovely!
VINEYARD
The grapes for this wine come from old vineyards in Mendoza; Maipú for the Malbec and Junin Rivadavia for the Shiraz. These vineyards are trained in the pergola fashion, using vertical shoot positioning. The vineyards comprise clay, loamy soils and the climate is continental at the 800 - 900m altitude. The vines range in age from 10 to 25 years old.
GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Malbec, 40% Shiraz
VINIFICATION
Selection is practiced in the vineyards during harvest and then the grapes are totally destemmed and softly crushed. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel at 24/27° C for 7 days and complete malolatic fermentation is allowed to occur naturally. 50% of the wine is then matured in 20% American oak and the remainder in French oak for 2 months.
The wine is then filtered before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
Ripe, juicy red with smooth tannins and bags of fruit. Raspberry, violets and blackberries dominate the nose with a touch of vanilla enhancing the berries on the palate
