LEITZ RÜDESHEIMER BERG SCHLOSSBERG SPÄTLESE 2006
Jancis Robinson recently said that "Johannes Leitz is now one of the absolute superstars, not just of the Rheingau but of German wine
in toto
." And who are we to argue with that conclusion, especially when you taste this absolutely fantastic, rich and ripe wine...
VINEYARD
The Josef Leitz estate is located in the town of Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany.
The vineyard area today totals 29 hectares, with holdings in the following Rüdesheim (steep sloping) sites: Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland, Berg Schlossberg, Bischofsberg, Drachenstein, Kaisersteinfels, Kirchenpfad, Klosterlay and Magdalenenkreuz. They are planted exclusively with Riesling .
The Schlossberg vineyard overlooks Ehrenfelz castle on the Rhine Soils in Schlossberg are about 20" of top soil, then slate, resulting in wines with a distinct mineral character.
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Reisling
VINIFICATION
Johannes Leitz says he sees himself as a producer of top quality grapes to be used as raw material for wines that express the individual character of the soils.
Wild yeasts are used for fermentation, which takes place in traditional large oak barrels as well as in stainless steel tanks.
This wine was subject to an overnight cold maceration and uses only botrytis affected grapes.
TASTING NOTE
The nose has a touch of oily, waxy fatness and honey, even a touch of toast, but the thrust is beautifully pure pear and apple fruit. The palate is another shimmering beauty, with the sweet, ripe, essence of very ripe pear, a touch of lemon zest, and a very, very fine acid structure that just runs as a beautiful edge to the sweetness.
