LA RIOJA ALTA VIÑA ARDANZA RESERVA ESPECIAL 2001 LA RIOJA ALTA VIÑA ARDANZA RESERVA ESPECIAL 2001

I may have, in the past, gone down as saying that this ranks amongst my favourite Rioja Reservas. For the 2001 vintage, this wine has been classified as "Reserva Especial"; a distinction only previously bestowed on the 1964 and 1973 vintages of Viña Ardanza. This wine, which will be remembered for many years, is also worthy of this distinction. To celebrate, it is available in a new, more modern presentation.

VINEYARD
The 30-year old Viña Ardanza estate, where most of the Tempranillo comes from, is in Fuenmayor, in the Rioja Alta district. The rest is from a selection of La Rioja Alta's vines also in Rioja Alta.

The Garnacha is from Ausejo and Tudelilla in Rioja Baja.

GRAPE VARIETIES
80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha

VINIFICATION
The 2001 vintage was low in quantity but exceptional in quality. The good temperatures favoured the fruit's development in excellent health. Together with grain size, this enabled the winemakers to make wines with intense colouring and complex aromas, ideal for long ageing process. The Garnacha in Rioja Baja was also intense in colour, with typical aromas and a balanced structure, suggesting singular quality.

Alcoholic fermentation took place for 14 days in stainless steel tanks. The malolactic fermentation process was over in 21 days. After being transferred, the wine went into casks in March 2002. It spent 36 months in American oak an average of 3 years old, and was racked by hand on 6 occasions.

Bottling took place in September 2005.

TASTING NOTE
The La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial 2001 is a clear and brilliant dark cherry red. It has a medium-high hue, with an incipient iodine tone on the rim of the glass. Intense, spicy and balsamic aromas, including coconut, vanilla, cinnamon and mint chocolate, over dry nuts. Its refined and complex bouquet is reminiscent of the brand's mythical vintages, especially 1964. Structured and balanced to the palate, with silky tannins. A pleasant, sophisticated after taste, which fills the mouth with never-ending sensations which time will enhance.

Especially suitable for roast lamb, grilled chops, game and rabbit, fish cooked in sauce and smoked and well-cured cheese.
