LA GIUSTINIANA GAVI DI GAVI
' Vigneti Lugarara'
2010
Often over-hyped and expensive, Gavi can lack body and fruit to balance the natural acidity of the Cortese grape. This wine has the body and fruit character to balance the acidity and is a great example of how good Gavi di Gavi can be in the right hands and with careful vinification.
VINEYARD
The Lugarara vineyards are located in Gavi, Rovereto, Piemonte.
The estate has a surface of 110 hectares, 40 of which are planted with highly specialised vines. All vineyards are between 300 and 500 meters above sea level and are located at latitude 44°41'. Soils here are grey marl with loose sandy topsoil, resulting in an open style of wine. The vines are Guyot trained and are planted at a density of 4000 vines/ha.

VINIFICATION
The plentiful snow during the winter lead to a wet and dreary Spring. The rain continued into early summer, but August and September were dry and sunny. In September, there was a notable difference between day and night temperatures, on occasion up to 25 degrees of variation. This helped to retain acidity and perfumes in the grapes.
The harvest started at La Giustiniana on the September 9 and finished on October 10. Yields were normal, up on 2009, which was 25% down on average.
"The wines are similar to those of 2006," says Enrico Tomalino of La Giustiniana. "They are more perfumed with higher acid and less weight than the 2009s.
The grapes are gently pressed, then cool fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Unoaked, the wine is bottled in the spring following the harvest.
TASTING NOTE
Straw-yellow with a greenish hue. On the nose it is more perfumed than the previous vintage, with scents of green apples and fresh pears. The palate is perfectly balanced with ripe, golden apples, fresh almonds and honey offset by the characteristic lifted lively finish of good Gavi.
