LA GITANA MANZANILLA NV
There are very few wine competition medals that this wine hasn't won. Consistently rated one of the finest "flor" sherries around, La Gitana demonstrates what great dry sherry is all about. Pale in colour, with a fresh, almost salty palate. If this wine was from Bordeaux, it would be five times the price!
VINEYARD
Manzanilla is a dry wine and the lightest and most delicate member of the Sherry region and can only be made in the coastal town of Sanlacar de Barrameda set at the mouth of the River Guadalquivir. The position of the town, set between the sea and the river and the marshlands to the north, combines with the particular topography of the town itself to create an especially humid and constant microclimate.
These conditions allow a special growth of yeast, known as the 'flor', to grow on the surface of the maturing wine all your round thus protecting it from the detrimental effects of oxygen.
The vines for the La Gitana are grown on the finest chalky
albriza
soils at the heart of the Jerez region. The majoirty of the grapes come from Balbaina and Miaflores districts in Jerez Superior
GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Palomino Fino
VINIFICATION
The grapes are harvested in early September and only the free run juice is used. The must then undergoes temperature controlled fermentation before being fortified in preparation to the ageing process.
The wine is then aged in a traditional
solera
system under a layer of
flor
in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (only wines aged in Sanlúcar can qualify as Manzanilla).
Before bottling the wine is cold stabilised and filtered before being bottled at the winery.
TASTING NOTE
The wine is a pale straw colour with a clean and delicate slightly yeasty nose. The palate is dry, with a slightly salty tang and reminiscent of green apples.
This wine is super with seafood, smoked food and as an aperitif. Always serve chilled, straight from the fridge.
