VIÑA IZADI RIOJA RESERVA 2003
Continuing the Izadi approach of making modern style wines, this reserve does show more wood ageing than the crianza. Izardi are really making some great wines and this shows a lovely red fruit character along with a smoky, spicy finish from the oak ageing - cracking!
VINEYARD
Izadi source their fruit from 186 hectares of vineyard. All the vineyards are either owned or leased on long-term contracts, so they have full control over production. All the vineyards have traditionally trained bush vines, a method which they believe gives better exposure of the grapes, something which in turn leads to better ripeness and softer, fuller wines.
Grapes for this wine are grown in vineyards at least 35 years old, on the Rioja Alavesa slopes where soils are predominantly limestone-clay.
GRAPE VARIETIES
73% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano, 12% Mazuelo and Garnacha
VINIFICATION
The grapes were hand-harvested into small 15kg boxes. A first selection of the fruit was made in the vineyard and a second at the winery.
Izadi embraced a more modern style of Reserva from 1999 with a move to ageing the wine primarily in French oak. Different parcels are vinified separately in order to give the winemakers more blending options at a later stage.
Grapes were de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at approximately 28°C with 'pumping over' several times daily to extraction colour and ripe tannins. The wine was aged for 20 months in 50% French oak (2nd year) and 50% new American oak casks.
TASTING NOTE
Delicate vinification and ageing produced a wine with great complexity and a very elegant style. A blend of Tempranillo tempered by a small amount of old vine Graciano, this is a complex wine of great personality. Intense ruby red in colour, with hints of red berries and smoky aromas on the nose. On the palate, the wine has multiple layers of flavour, fine tannins, and a long elegant finish. It is already drinking beautifully, but has everything that is necessary to age well
