VIÑA IZADI RIOJA BLANCO 2006
This is a modern style white Rioja. The wines have real intensity of fruit, purityof flavour and individuality, showing a good balance between fruit, oak and a clean fresh acidity on the finish - very different from
traditional
Rioja.
VINEYARD
The fruit for the Izadi wines is grown on 186 hectares of vineyard, all of which are either owned or leased on long term contracts, so they have full control over production. Fruit for the Rioja Blanco comes from the Villabuena, Samaniego and La Puebla vineyards. All the vineyards have traditionally trained bush vines, a method which they believe gives better exposure of the grapes, something which in turn leads to better ripeness and softer, fuller wines.
GRAPE VARIETIES
80% Viura, 20% Malvasia
VINIFICATION
The grapes for the Rioja Blanco are grown on some of the oldest vines in the area. The must was fermented in 100% new, fine grain oak casks (80% American, 20% French).
Batonnage
(lees stirring) took place daily for the first few weeks after fermentation, and then the wine was aged on its fine lees for 3 months.
TASTING NOTE
Despite the new oak, the wine is fresh and vibrant on the nose, with a lively perfumes of almonds and flowers. On the palate it is powerful with an excellent balance between fruit, oak and a clean, fresh acidity lifting the finish.
