POGGIOTONDO 'CERRO DEL MASSO' CHIANTI 2008
POGGIOTONDO 'CERRO DEL MASSO' CHIANTI 2008
You can't go wrong with a good Chianti. Sadly good Chianti isn't that easy to come by, but this version, made by flying winemaker and all round good egg Alberto Antonini. It offers a lovely perfumed character, soft and round tannins and really attractive red fruit character. A great value young Chianti.

A MANO NEGROAMARO 2007
For something a bit unusual, why not try this wine made from a classic grape from Puglia in Southern Italy; the Negroamaro which offers a interesting insight into the quality of the wines now being made there. This wine offers great value and unusual drinking, giving a highly perfumed, rich and fruity wine.

ALLEGRINI VALPOLICELLA 2009
Another Italian wine that is often made poorly and underrated as a result. Allegrini is a producer of great, classical Vaolpolicella showing attractive perfume, black cherries and a lively acidity, this is a really super example of this wine, for a great price.

LI VELI ORION SALENTO IGT PRIMITIVO 2008
Li Veli is one of the new stars of the Italian wine scene and their "simple" IGT Primitivo from Puglia shows what exciting things are happening in the far south. Made from Primitivo (better known to most as Zinfandel), this is a fresh, plumy and spicy wine with a lovely balancing acidity on the finish. GAJA CA' MARCANDA PROMIS 2006
Ca'Marcanda is the newest venture from Angelo Gaja of Barbaresco fame. The wine, hailing from Bolgeri on the Tuscan coast, is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. A splendid effort and one that simply shows what a top quality winemaker Gaja is, without the price tag of his Piemonte wines. 90 Points from Robert Parker.

GIOVANNI ALLEGRINI RECIOTO CLASSICO 2005
Recioto is similar to Amarone in that it is made by drying grapes on straw mats to concentrate the sugars and flavours. The difference comes when the wine is fermented; recioto is a sweet wine showing attractive cherry, dark fruits and some spice. Very different and an excellent example.

TENUTA FONTODI SYRAH 2004
Fontodi's Syrah is ranked as one of Italy's best examples of this variety, made very much in the Northern Rhône style, it is often compared with the great Côte Rotie's of Guigal. With this as a comparison, the spicy cherry nose and smooth, intense palate are too good to miss.

ALLEGRINI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2005
Amarone is made by drying grapes on straw mats to concentrate the sugars and flavours. This leads to a highly extracted and alcoholic wine with massive depth of flavour and complexity. It is a dry wine, but shows a sweet and attractive fruit character. Goodness me, this is really good!

The estate of GD Vajra (named for its current operator Aldo Vajra's grandfather, Giuseppe Domenico), is situated in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. Its vineyards are planted at heights of 350-400 metres, which results in distinctive and aromatic wines. The 'Bricco delle Viole' from a great vintage demonstrates a what a truly classic Barolo is all about; violets, roses and perfumed fruit backed by robust but balancing tannin. Lovely!

PODERI ALDO CONTERNO BAROLO 2004
Aldo Conterno is one of the finest producers of Barolo. This was a great year in Piemonte and it breaks the "drought" of 2002 and 2003 as the family declassified the grapes due to poor vintages. 2004 however is a superb year, with fine balance with perfect depth and structure and all the perfume you would expect from a great Barolo.
