ISOLE E OLENA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2009
This estate, run by the De Marchi familiy, is one of the most respected in Chianti. This classic Chianti Classico wine is a light but brilliant ruby colour with an alluring, Pinot-like nose and soft, accessible fruit on the palate.
VINEYARDS
The grapes are grown on the Isole e Olena estate which covers 45 hectares, of which 42 are planted with vines and 35 are in production. The vineyards are approximately 400 metres above sea level and face south-west. The oldest vines on the estate were planted in 1958 and the youngest in 1999. Paolo De Marchi took over the running of the family-owned estate in the mid 1970's and 1976 was his first vintage.
GRAPE VARIETIES
80% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, 5% Syrah
VINIFICATION
The must is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with approximately 15 days maceration. During fermentation,
delestage
and pumping-over takes place twice a day.
Delestage
is a method of extraction during fermentation which gives wines of good colour and soft tannins. The maceration tank is emptied of fermenting must, the cap allowed to dry out for two to three hours and then the must is poured back over the cap. De Marchi first experimented with this method in 1996 and subsequently began using it for all red wines from the 1997 vintage. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into barrel and cask. Maturation takes place in barrel (of which 15% is new oak) and 4000 litre oak casks where it matures for about a year. It is then bottled and released after 3-4 months.
TASTING NOTES
Good depth of ruby with a dark core and youthful rim, the 2009 has a minty, eucalyptus note which offsets the pure, lightly spiced red berry fruit of the Sangiovese. The Syrah adds a touch of colour and a ripe, roundness to the palate which blends perfectly with the judiciously judged oak. Plenty of ripe tannins and a lift on the finish.
