CAVE DE HUNAWIHR PINOT GRIS 2006 CAVE DE HUNAWIHR PINOT GRIS 2006

Hunawihr is a small co-operative in the heart of Alsace, making wines with quality and value in mind. It was rated the best co-operative in Alsace, and third in the whole of France, by the Revue de Vins de France in 2005. This wine is a pretty typical, high quality Alsace Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio to you Italian fans) showing lovely honey, lemon and tropical fruit flavours so often lacking in Italy.

VINEYARD
The grapes for this wine are grown in vineyards running along the south and south-east facing Hunawihr hillside slopes at an altitude of 250- 320 m above sea level. They cover an area of 23 hectares, with calcareous clay soils. Yields are 80 hl/ha and the average age of the vines is 25 years old.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Gris

VINIFICATION
This Pinot Gris is a blend of wines made from different parts of the vineyards. The blend was assembled in July 2006. Temperature controlled fermentation took place between 16-18°C for 3 weeks followed by 3 to 4 months in stainless steel tanks before filtration. No malolactic fermentation was allowed to take place. The wine was bottled on 27th August 2007.

TASTING NOTE
Light, bright yellow in colour, this wine is full and spicy on the nose, with perfumes of apricots and smoke. On the palate it is relatively full bodied with good balance of nutty, oily fruit and clean acidity despite the level of residual sugar. The clean dry finish prevents the wine from cloying.
