HUIA PINOT NOIR 2006

This Pinot Noir from Marlborough is a very different example of New Zealand Pinot than those that try to emulate Burgundy. A classic, highly fruity style, this wine has lovely aromas of cherry, strawberry and sweet spice, but with enough structure and acidity to hold its own against robust meats and game.

VINEYARD
The vineyards are in the Marlborough region of the South Island of New Zealand and are predominately windblown glacial clay with areas of river-stone and to a lesser extent layered sand, silty loam and river-stone. Vineyard sites are located in the Southern Valleys upper Brancott Valley, West Coast Road and lastly adjacent to the Wairau River.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Pinot Noir

VINFICATION
The grapes are destemmed and then macerated for 3 to 6 days before fermentation. The must is then fermented in open top fermenters and covered tanks using cultured yeasts for 7 days at up to 32 degrees celcius. The wine is then undergoes malolactic before aging for 10 months in medium toast French oak on light lees. The wine is then filtered with cellulose and lightly fined with egg whites before bottling under screwcap.

TASTING NOTE
Intense berry and cherry aromas. On the palate these characters meld with the smoky, spicy oak. The tannins are silky and well integrated. A well balanced wine with great length and persistence.
