HUIA GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2006 HUIA GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2006

New Zealand is starting to make a name for itself with the quality of its Gewürztraminer and this wine from Huia is a good illustration why. Showing all the richness and perfume one would expect from this grape, you will find all the tropical fruit and spice you need in this wine. Great with spicy Chinese, Thai and Asian food.

VINEYARD
The soil in the Huia vineyards is a loam layer over clay. Grapes are sourced from both the owned vineyards and a small group of dedicated growers from specific sites around the Wairau valley.

Different soil profiles, rainfall patterns and orientation of vineyards are some important factors in choosing the variety most suited to that location. Each site gives the grapes a range of flavours that show in the wines.

The viticultural techniques applied across all vineyards aim to maximise grape quality in every vintage. Particular attention is paid to controlling yields along with canopy management to expose fruit to the sun and provide ripe, healthy grapes. Huia uses these techniques to optimise the natural balance between sugar, acid and all the flavours.

The Gewürztraminer 2006 comes from two vineyard sites: The Reed vineyard in the upper Wairau Valley and the Traminer-View vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The two vineyards supply Huia with a combination of six Gewürztraminer cultivars.

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Gewürztraminer

VINIFICATION
These were all hand picked, then crushed and de-stemmed, before undergoing a combination of indigenous and inoculated yeast fermentation, giving the components more complexity. A third of the wine was fermented in old French oak, bringing in an extra layer of richness and creaminess. The rest was fermented in stainless steel.

TASTING NOTE
On the nose this wine seduces with its rose petals and Turkish delight aromas. Followed by warm spices, ripe pear and tropical fruit. The palate is rich in flavours: you will find vanilla bean, orange and spices. Very nicely layered, complex and long. This is a beautiful example of dry Gewürztraminer.

Huia Gewürztraminer is delicious with terrines and patés, Thai food, mild curries, smoked seafood and meats, soy honey duck, blue cheeses and aged cheddar.
