This Chardonnay is soft-textured and gentle with good length and complexity. It has nice nutty lees and a subtle oak character making this an elegant and balanced wine and offering super quality for the price. VINEYARD The soil in the Huia vineyards is a loam layer over clay. Grapes are sourced from both the owned vineyards and a small group of dedicated growers from specific sites around the Wairau valley. Different soil profiles, rainfall patterns and orientation of vineyards are some important factors in choosing the variety most suited to that location. Each site gives the grapes a range of flavours that show in the wines. The viticultural techniques applied across all vineyards aim to maximise grape quality in every vintage. Particular attention is paid to controlling yields along with canopy management to expose fruit to the sun and provide ripe, healthy grapes. Huia uses these techniques to optimise the natural balance between sugar, acid and all the flavours. The 2006 Chardonnay is Estate grown from the Huia Rapaura vineyard. The major portion is Dijon 95 Chardonnay clone. A long, warm and sunny growing season produced a great concentration of flavours and a lively acidity. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Chardonnay VINIFICATION The grapes were all handpicked, de-stemmed and crushed. A long indigenous yeast fermentation, partial malolactic ferment and 10 months maturation in French oak have contributed to create a sophisticated, elegant and finely structured Chardonnay. TASTING NOTE The aromatic nose displays white peach, pear and exotic vanilla. The palate is creamy and intense, layered with ripe fruit and well integrated oak flavours. The finish is long and powerful. Huia Chardonnay is delicious with smoked fish, char-grilled salmon, lobster/crayfish, roasted or baked chicken, pasta in cream sauce, matured Brie and other soft cheeses.
