HENSCHKE HILL OF GRACE 1989 HENSCHKE HILL OF GRACE 1989

We are delighted that we've managed to secure a very small parcel of one of Australia's greatest and most sought after wines, Henschke's Hill of Grace. Made from 100 year old+ Shiraz vines, this is considered to be the finest single vineyard in Australia and to find an example with such great bottle age is a rare treat.

VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES

VINEYARD
The Hill of Grace vineyard is located in the Eden Valley wine region, 4km north-west of Henschke Cellars at Keyneton, in the Mt Lofty Ranges east of Barossa Valley, South Australia, 400m above sea level.

Its 8ha still contain vines planted in 1860s and average yields are a mere 2.5 t/ha. The soil is aluvial, sandy loam over clay and the land is not irrigated. The vines are trained as Scott Henry and widely planted

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Shiraz

VINIFICATION
Stephen Henschke's approach is to handcraft every wine. Each vintage produces seeply personal, hand-crafted wines to reflect the individuality and the unique terroir of Henschke's
vineyard blocks and this is especially true with the Hill of Grace.

The wine is fermented at a surprisingly low temperature of between 18 to 20oC to help preserve the fruit character. Pumping over takes place each day for the six to seven days of the fermentation before running the wine off and completing the fermentation in oak barrels, at least 50% in new American oak.

The wine is then aged in a mix of new and used American oak for 12 to 18 months before very gentle filtration and then a further two to three years in bottle before release.

TASTING NOTE
The wine has an intensely deep purple/ crimson in colour with a sweet perfumed bouquet overlaid with chocolate, prunes and liquorice, tar, truffles and earth. A lush, pure and sweet offering with all the essences of ripe Shiraz, ravishing spice and fruits of the forest, elements of baked cakes, clovey pepper, soy and plum and vanilla. The tannins are now silky and soft. The finish is very long with massive and mouthfilling complexity.
